Grandpa Boyle's Visit to Idaho

October 29 through November 7, 2006, Tom visited Idaho and stayed with us in Boise for a short visit. He celebrated Halloween with Natalie, Jenny and Jeffery's children, then embarked on a three-day trip to North Idaho with Larry. They followed the Lewis and Clark trail along the Clearwater River, drove along the Salmon River, visited historical sites along the way including Nez Perce Indian and U.S. Army battlefields and saw a lot of wildlife including flocks of wild turkey.

We were proud to have Tom attend all three meetings on Sunday with us. He was introduced and asked to say a few words by the instructors.

A visit to central Idaho en route to north Idaho is a land of contrasts. Near Cascade the weight of decades of snow has taken its toll on a barn.

Grandpa enjoyed reading all of the Historical signs along the way. This was an old gold mining site on the Salmon River.

After leaving the Salmon River and Hell's Canyon area, Grandpa and Larry drove along the Clearwater River in Nez Perce & Lewis and Clark country.

This is magnificent country. Tom and Larry saw deer, elk and hundreds of wild turkeys.

"Rocky Mountain Oysters anyone?"

Labels: In Grangeville, on their drive back to Boise, they ate at Ernie's famous western steakhouse.

After stopping on the vast Camas Prairie, they stopped at the top of Whitebird pass, the natural barrier dividing northern and southern Idaho.

Far below Grandpa in the canyon is the little village of Whitebird, the gateway to Hell's Canyon, the deepest gorge in north America. On the east side of the gorge is Idaho and on the west are Washington and Oregon.
